Join our lively group of nature enthusiasts for programs presented by top birding and nature personalities in the Rio Grande Valley of South Texas. Field trips to out-of-the-ordinary birding spots, many to private lands not usually accessible by the public, and a quarterly newsletter are other benefits of membership. Members and the general public are invited to meetings on the 2nd Thursday of the month, September to May, 6:00 P.M., in the Harlingen Public Library, 410 76 Drive, Harlingen, TX.

September will be a busy month for ACAS members. Non-members are always invited to attend our events.Take your pick and join one of our activities. Mark your Calendar!

September 1st meet at Hugh Ramsey Nature Park for a Conservation Work Day 7:30 am to 9:30 am.

September 8th Birder Patrol will visit Frontera Audubon Society location in Weslaco. Meeting places TBA.


September 13th our FOS Speaker Social will be honored to have Donna McCown review her summer Backyard Baby Birds with a slide show of her great photos. 6:00 pm at the Harlingen Public Library Auditorium


September 15th our FOS Field Trip will be a Ramsey Park Breakfast and Birds. We will meet at 7:30 am bringing a pot luck items for breakfast at the pavilion. Birding the park and viewing the stream bridge and bird blind built by the summer Eagle Scout project. 

Since this is also a designated work day in Ramsey we will be watering and moving hoses before during and after our Breakfast and Birds.

June 14, 2018 - Speaker Tony Henehan on Improving your Birding ID Skills.
Tony is a TPWD Wildlife Biologist and has a Facebook page at Rio Grande Valley Urban Wildlife - Texas Parks and Wildlife. He began working for Texas Parks and Wildlife Department in the Rio Grande Valley in 2016 after graduating from A&M-Kingsville with a Master’s Degree. He works with urban biology, private lands biology, and WMA biology.  


July 12 and August 9, 2018 -
Speaker Javier Gonzalez on Improving your Birding ID Skills.  
Javi is the Naturalist Educator at the South Padre Island Birding & Nature Center. He grew up in the RGV in McAllen and is an avid naturalist interested in all aspects of our special nature. He has a special interest in the habitats and wildlife of the coastal environments in the RGV. 
July 12, 2018 - Speaker Javi Gonzalez  - Summer Birds of South Padre Island
South Padre Island is not only a paradise for people, but also for a great diversity of birds. This program is a great opportunity to learn all about the resident and summer breeding bird of SPI before you take your next summer beach getaway to the island! To use your newly gained birding skills a field trip led by ACAS members will be taken on Saturday July 14 to South Padre Island Bird and Nature Center. Meeting time is 7:30 am at Hugh Ramsey Nature Center to car pool to SPI or you may meet the group at SPI BNC at 8:30 am.
August 9, 2018 - Speaker Javi Gonzalez Coastal Hotspots and Birding:
The coastal habitats on the southern tip of TX have an extraordinary abundance of bird life! The diversity one can see in a span of a year is incredible! This program will introduce the how’s, when’s, and where’s of birding along the coast to help you get the most out of birding in the area! 

To use your newly gained shore birding skills a field trip, led by ACAS members, will be taken on Saturday August 11 to Boca Chica Beach. Meeting time is 7:30 am at Hugh Ramsey Nature Center to car pool to Boca Chica or email arroyocoloradoaudubon@gmail.com to meet en route to Hwy. 4.

Special Message from ACAS corporate member, The Inn at Chachalaca Bend
We would like to offer all ACAS members a special rate to stay at the Inn sometime: 2 nights for the price of one (with breakfast), for any of our rooms. Good for up to 2 people any day except holidays/holiday weekends or during the Birding Festival week (contingent upon availability, of course!). We just want more of our locals to be able to really enjoy our unique property!
Also, ACAS members are always welcome to bird the property - no fee required, though we will except donations toward birdseed for those so inclined! All guests should call ahead to make an appointment and will need to make arrangements to come by the office and get a visitor's pass.

Meet at Hugh Ramsey Nature Park at 7:30 am. We will follow the directions from the Great Texas Wildlife Trails 〉 Lower Texas Coast - Great Texas Coastal Birding Trail 〉 Los Loros Loop
Visit our City Parks when birding is at its’ best. We will not have time to do the complete sites but visiting just the parking lots is often productive and will introduce you to some new sites for your birding.

April 25, 2018—Wed—ACAS Big Sit for Great Texas Birding Classic location The Inn at Chachalaca Bend
Up to 20 members or friends may register to join team ACAS Havenly Chachalacas and receive a free t-shirt.  Contact Norma at 36-676-6416 or email acaskiskadee@yahoo.com to register and provide t-shirt size.  Bird both days at both locations or just one day at the location of the day.  Partial days are also helpful.
Anyone is welcome to come as a non-team member to bird the property of our two corporate members and check on our progress.
